Following, Insomnia & The Dark Knight Rises: The Pattern Never Changes
Go back to the beginning. Following — a man who follows strangers until he becomes the thing he was watching. Insomnia — a cop who can’t sleep because guilt is louder than conscience. The Dark Knight Rises — a broken city and a broken man who both have to decide what they’re willing to sacrifice to be reborn.
Nolan has been telling the same story since 1998. We are all following something — a memory, a ghost, a version of ourselves that no longer exists. We are all losing sleep over the things we’ve done in the dark. And sometimes the only way out is to burn everything down and start again.
The physics is consistent across his work: time is not linear, identity is fluid, and the universe doesn’t give a damn about your redemption arc. The philosophy is even older: We lie to ourselves so we can keep going. We become monsters so others don’t have to. We chase meaning in a cosmos that only offers entropy.
Rust Cohle would’ve watched every Nolan film and said the same thing at the end of each one: “Time is a flat circle. You think you’re moving forward, but you’re just walking the same path in different shoes.”
That’s not cynicism. That’s clarity.
Christopher Nolan doesn’t make movies about hope. He makes movies about what hope costs. And in a universe that’s slowly tearing itself apart, that might be the most honest thing cinema can offer.
We keep watching. We keep lying to ourselves. We keep pretending the top will fall.
And maybe, for a few hours in a dark room, that’s enough.
