Park Street: The Street That Never Sleeps and Its Many Stories

Park Street is perhaps the most loved road in Kolkata. Even today, when people say “let’s go to Park Street,” they mean good food, lights, and a special feeling that no other place in the city gives. The story of Park Street begins in the early 19th century. The British built it as a wide, straight road leading from Chowringhee towards the eastern part of the city. They named it Park Street because there was a big park at one end. At that time, it was a quiet, residential area where many British families lived in large houses with gardens. One of the most famous things on Park Street is the South Park Street Cemetery. It was opened in 1767 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in Kolkata. Many important people from the early British days are buried here — soldiers, judges, writers, and even young women who died far from home. If you walk inside the cemetery today, you will see old tombs with beautiful carvings and sad stories written on the stones. It is a quiet, green place in the middle of the busy city. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, Park Street became the centre of social life in Calcutta. Rich families, both British and Indian, would come here for dinner and dancing. Famous restaurants like Firpo’s, Maxim’s, and later Trincas and Mocambo opened their doors. The street became known for its nightlife. Even during the difficult years of World War II and the 1940s, Park Street continued to have music and lights. After independence, Park Street remained special. In the 1950s and 60s, it was the place where young people came to see the latest Hollywood films, eat continental food, and listen to live bands. The famous “Park Street” song by the band in Trincas is still remembered by older generations. The street had a mix of old British-style buildings and new modern shops. Today, Park Street is still alive at night. The Christmas lights, the crowds, the smell of food from the restaurants — all of it creates a magic that is hard to find anywhere else in Kolkata. Some of the old restaurants are still running. New ones have also come up. The street has changed with time, but it has kept its special character. Park Street is like a living storybook of Kolkata. It has seen the British time, the excitement of independence, the difficult days of the 1970s, and now the busy modern city. Through all these changes, it has remained a place where people come to celebrate, to eat good food, and to feel the heartbeat of the city. If streets could talk, Park Street would have the most interesting stories to tell.
