Entropy, LLMs, and the Slow Heat Death of Human Meaning

The second law of thermodynamics does not only apply to steam engines and dying stars. It applies to meaning itself. Every time we generate text with an LLM, we are accelerating a kind of cultural entropy. The model takes the low-entropy, high-information signal of original human thought and turns it into high-entropy, statistically average output. The more we rely on these systems to write, think, and speak for us, the more the total information in the system trends toward noise. This is not a moral panic. This is physics. In an isolated system, disorder increases. Human culture was never truly isolated — we borrowed, stole, remixed — but there was always a cost to creation. Now the cost is approaching zero. We can generate infinite variations of “profound” text without the friction of lived experience. The result is not evil. It is simply more probable. And the probable is rarely the true. We are watching the heat death of originality in real time. Not because machines are malicious, but because averaging is what statistical systems do best. The sharp edges of individual voice get smoothed into something pleasant, safe, and ultimately forgettable. The tragedy is not that LLMs will replace writers. The tragedy is that we might stop noticing the difference between something written by a person who had no choice but to say it, and something assembled from everything that has already been said. Entropy always wins in the end. But we still get to choose whether we meet it with more noise or with deliberate, costly acts of resistance — things written slowly, by hand, by people who are willing to be wrong in public.
