Strand Road: The Beautiful Road by the River That Saw Kolkata Grow

Strand Road is one of the most beautiful roads in Kolkata, running along the bank of the Hooghly River. Even today, if you walk or drive on this road in the evening, you can feel the cool breeze from the river and see the lights of Howrah Bridge shining in the distance. The story of Strand Road begins in the late 18th century. The British wanted a proper road along the river for trade and for the beauty of the city. They built a wide road with a walkway on the river side. It became a favourite place for evening walks for the British officers and their families. They would come in their carriages and enjoy the view of the river and the ships. In the 19th century, Strand Road became very important for trade. Many big offices and warehouses were built along this road. The river was full of ships bringing goods from England and taking away jute, tea, and other things from Bengal. The famous Writers’ Building is not far from here, and many government offices were located in this area. The road connected the port with the main business district. One of the most important events connected with Strand Road happened in 1857, during the First War of Independence. There were some incidents in this area, but more importantly, the road became a symbol of British power because it was so close to the river and the port. After independence, Strand Road remained an important road, but the nature of the river traffic changed. Big ships no longer came as much as before. The beautiful old buildings started showing their age. But the road still had a special charm because of the river. Today, Strand Road is being developed again. There are plans to make the riverfront more beautiful with parks and walkways. The Howrah Bridge and the new Vidyasagar Setu can be seen clearly from here. In the evenings, many people come to the riverfront to enjoy the breeze and the view. The old buildings are being restored in some places. Strand Road is special because it shows Kolkata’s connection with the river. The city was born because of the Hooghly River. Trade came through the river. The British built their city here because ships could reach this place. Even today, when you stand on Strand Road and look at the river, you can understand why Kolkata became such an important city. The road has seen many changes — from the time when it was a fashionable walking place for British ladies and gentlemen, to the busy commercial road of the 20th century, to the more quiet but still beautiful road of today. It has seen the river change, the city change, and the country change. But the Hooghly still flows beside it, and the lights still shine on the bridges at night. If you ever feel tired of the crowded and noisy parts of Kolkata, come to Strand Road in the evening. Sit on one of the benches if you can find one, or just stand by the railing and look at the river. You will feel the old soul of the city — calm, a little tired, but still alive with memories. That is the real story of Strand Road.
